Kangxi Porcelain Table Lamp

This authentic Kangxi period (1662–1722) porcelain table lamp is crafted from the lower section of a Chinese yenyen vase, produced in the historic kiln centers of Jingdezhen during the early Qing dynasty. Decorated in brilliant underglaze cobalt blue, the ceramic features classic depictions of cranes, deer, and pine trees—auspicious Chinese symbols traditionally associated with longevity, nobility, and good fortune.

Kangxi Porcelain Table Lamp Restoration & Conversion

Following an irreparable break to its original flaring trumpet neck, the upper section of the vase was historically trimmed down. Fractures across the surviving lower body have been sympathetically restored at Antefact using traditional gold-finish kintsugi, highlighting the object’s history through artistic Japanese joinery.

To support the electrical fitting, a custom neck mount was turned from an antique elm beam. This tailored element subtly references the vase’s original silhouette, altbeit at reduced height to improve overal proportions. The lamp conversion is fully reversible, requiring no drilling or structural modifications to the historic porcelain. A hand-selected blue lampshade complements the rich underglaze cobalt decoration.

Historical Significance & Symbolism

Porcelain produced during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor is celebrated globally for its high-firing purity, sapphire-blue cobalt shades, and refined brushwork. In traditional Chinese art, the combination of cranes (xianhe) and deer (lu) amidst evergreen pine trees conveys a wishes for enduring life and prosperity, making this piece both a functional statement lighting fixture and a rich piece of cultural history.

🇳🇱 Nederlandse Samenvatting
