Pair of 17th-century Delft vases converted to lamps

This matching pair of Delft vases, dating back to the late 17th century, was produced at the Drie Posteleyne Astonne factory, which was overseen by the renowned potter Gerrit Pietersz. Kam between 1679 and 1700. One of the vases bears the “GK” monogram on the bottom, marking them as part of the celebrated output of this prestigious faience workshop (M.S. van Aken-Fehmers et al. (2001) Delfts aardewerk. Geschiedenis van een nationaal product, Volume II, Zwolle/Den Haag (Gemeentemuseum)).

The eight-sided vases are decorated in graded cobalt blue, featuring a chinoiserie scene in the transitional style. The design showcases a standing and sitting group of Chinese figures in a landscape with pierced rocks, bamboo, and pine trees, inspired by Chinese transitional porcelain (ca. 1620-1683).

Historically, both vases had their crowns removed—likely due to damage. These were replaced with turned wooden elements to restore their original silhouette. Expertly converted into lamps, the vases retain their antique integrity, with side-entry lamp fittings that avoid drilling additional holes. The vases are complemented by elegant ochre velvet lampshades, on hinged E27 fittings, providing a striking contrast to the cobalt blue designs.

These vases are more than just lamps—they are a perfect blend of historical craftsmanship and modern functionality, making them an ideal choice for collectors and interior designers who appreciate the enduring beauty of Delftware.
