The Story & Origin

Crafted in Jingdezhen during the reign of Emperor Kangxi (1662–1722), this porcelain bowl represents a beautiful example of early Qing dynasty underglaze blue painting. The exterior is adorned with a fluid, continuous scroll of aster or chrysanthemum flowers among dense foliage, bounded by double-ring borders around the rim and foot rim.

The interior features a detailed central floral medallion framed by a geometric diaper rim band on the inner lip.

The Restoration (Kintsugi)

Rather than concealing its journey through time, the bowl’s vertical hairline breaks have been lovingly restored using kintsugi (the traditional Japanese art of joining broken ceramics with lacquer dusted with gold powder). The striking golden veins contrast beautifully with the rich cobalt blue underglaze, celebrating the object’s history of use, damage, and rebirth.
